Back in Time

For those of you familiar with PRI, we thought you would find this intriguing. This diagram was presented in the first course given by Ron Hruska. The course was given in September of 1995 and was called “Postural Reconstruction - An Integrated Approach to Treatment of Upper Half Musculoskeletal and Respiratory Dysfunction”. This is literally, the first sketch of the Left AIC, Right BC and PEC chain!

Washington Post Article: Left vs. Right

Why Righties and Lefties? Scientists Have Hands Full, written by David Brown, is an article published in The Washington Post, March 2009. This is a fun article that speculates on why some individuals become left handed. One area of discussion is onlateralization:

“Lateralization saves space and, therefore, working capacity, by not requiring that both hemispheres do the same thing. It diminishes the chance of interference and confusion, which might arise if each side of the brain independently analyzed the same input from the environment and came up with its own decisions about what to do about it.”

This article also ties in so many areas that we have been currently discussing at PRI, such as, eye dominance:

“Prenatal effects are much clearer in chickens, where lateralization is largely determined by which eye is exposed to light coming through the shell during incubation. In most chick embryos, it’s the right eye. That produces adult birds that are better at identifying food and prey using the right eye (with the information processed on the left side of the brain), and better at detecting predators and sexual advances using the left eye (and right side of the brain).”

Basic Concepts of the Postural Restoration Institute®

Over the years, several individuals have requested that we write something explaining what Postural Restoration is at a level of patient understanding. Most recently, someone asked us to add something to our website that would help educate individuals who are unfamiliar with PRI. Ron Hruska glady fulfilled this request and we are excited to start using this piece of literature to help educate and inform those that are interested in PRI. For those clinicians practicing PRI that also needed an explanation to handout to your constituents, here it is.

Print Resources - Ethnography of the Postural Restoration Subculture

Kyndy Boyle is the author of this 223 page dissertation which includes five chapters, appendices, tables and figures as a result of a qualitative study to identify and describe in detail the findings, beliefs, clinical reasoning and concepts of Postural Restoration (PR). A history of the Postural Restoration Institute™, the Protonics Neuromuscular System® and the PRISM pool is given as well as a definition of PR. Several direct quotes from interviews with Ron Hruska and the first five physical therapists certified in PR are presented. Unsolicited direct quotes from patients describing their experiences of having physical therapy management from PT’s trained in PR are also presented. Three color figures are included depicting the associated soft tissue and bony relationships to the Left Anterior Interior Chain (L AIC) pattern as well as the Brachial Chain (BC), and Temporal Mandibular Cervical Chain (TMCC) patterns. A comparison of Postural Restoration and Florence Kendall is also described in detail. Implications of Postural Restoration on the health professions are also given.

PRC Review Committee

Our 2009 Postural Restoration Certification (PRC) Application Review Committee has been finalized. Each year 4-5 PRC therapists review the applications offering specific feedback and recommendations to each applicant. The committee is revolving so each year a new member is selected from the previous class. This year the committee includes: Jason Masek, Jen Poulin, Lori Thomsen, Michal Niedzielski and Kyndy Boyle. With the committee finalized we’re ready for applications to begin arriving. Anytime from now until September 15th applications may be submitted for review. Approximately 4 weeks after submission, applicants will receive feedback and recommendations that will assist them in determining their readiness for the PRC examination process in December. In addition, the Reviewer’s will guide the applicant in specific areas of study prior to PRC.

Asymmetry of the Face in Orthodontic Patients…

...is the latest article being passed around PRI! Following a great weekend in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, covering Cervical-Cranio-Mandibular Restoration, Ron Hruska wanted to let you know about this fantastic article he came across:

“The results showed that 79.7% of subjects with facial asymmetry had a wider right hemiface and that 79.3% of the subjects with chin deviation showed left-sided laterality. Laterality in the normal asymmetry of the face is consistenly found in Japenese orthodontic patients. The right sided dominance of the face was independent of sex, age, and skeletal jaw relationships. In this regard, the proportion of subjects with a wider right hemiface was larger at earlier ages than at later ages, while the proportion of subjects with a wider left hemiface was larger at later ages than earlier.” - Haraguchi S, Iguchi Y, and Takada K.

Postural Restoration Certification (PRC) Updates

Clinical and course updates have now been posted to the PRC Member’s Only page. This section of our website is reserved for those therapists who have successfully completed our Postural Restoration Certification process of both application and examination.

For those of you who may be considering Certification, please mark your calendars for September 15th. This is the application deadline for 2009. You will find a printable application and more details provided on our website. The application now includes an example case study and an example article review that will provide additional guidance. Please contact me with any questions.
