Mini Residency Program

The Postural Restoration Institute® is excited to offer a new PRI Mini Residency Program, a formal program of post-professional education and mentorship for PRI-minded healthcare and movement professionals that is designed to enhance one’s understanding and application of PRI concepts, objective testing, and patient/client management. The foundational science from the Postural Restoration Institute’s three primary courses will be strongly emphasized by all PRI Mini Residency Centers, however each PRI Mini Residency Center offers a unique environment and experience, and many residency centers will also include exposure to interdisciplinary integration with other healthcare or movement professionals.

This PRI Mini Residency Program is designed for healthcare or movement professionals who are self-directed learners, have completed the required PRI coursework, and would like to enhance their clinical reasoning, interpersonal communication and dialogue using PRI terminology with other professionals as well as patients or clients, and application skills of the science of Postural Restoration® through one-on-one clinical education and mentorship with a PRC or PRT professional at a PRI Mini Residency Center.

Resident Application

Interested applicants should review the descriptions and responses provided by each PRI Mini Residency Center (in the “PRI Mini Residency Centers” tab), to determine which PRI Mini Residency Center(s) they would like to apply. Within the descriptions, the Mini Residency Centers have outlined the process for submitting an application, and availability for upcoming residents. One may apply to more than one PRI Mini Residency Center. Please note that some PRI Mini Residency Centers may have other course requirements, in addition to completion of the PRI primary courses.

Please mail a copy of your completed application form and all supporting documentation to both the PRI Mini Residency Center for which you have chosen to apply, as well as the Postural Restoration Institute® (Attn: Jennifer Platt, 5255 R Street, Lincoln, NE 68504).

An interview, virtual or live, depending on the PRI Mini Residency Center and applicant preference and/or location, will be scheduled after the application has been reviewed and accepted for interview by the PRI Mini Residency Center.

Each PRI Mini Residency Center offers a unique environment and experience, through one-on-one clinical education and mentorship with PRC or PRT professionals. Below is the current list of PRI Mini Residency Centers (listed alphabetically). Each PRI Mini Residency Center offers a unique environment and experience, and many residency centers will also include exposure to interdisciplinary integration with other healthcare or movement professionals. PRI Mini Residency Centers

At Divergence Physical Therapy and Wellness, residents can expect to be involved in an environment that they have not been exposed to before. Where methods divergence from the norm, but rehab and performance converge, the resident will be involved in every part of the Physical Therapy process and bridge the gap to high level Personal Training. Divergence participates in daily continuing education activities both independently and with the Institute and challenges its therapists, clients, and residents to become better every single day, while also enjoying themselves.

Divergence would like to offer 3 resident positions per year. The application deadline for the October residency is September 17th, the deadline for February is January 14th, and the deadline for June is May 14th.

The Hruska Clinic staff specializes in providing our patients with an individualized program based on the science and application of PRI principles. Our clinic also often helps manage complex patient presentations which often require collaborative care with other health professionals. Any resident of the Hruska Clinic will have the opportunity to work not only with experienced experts in PRI application, but will gain experience in direct one on one management and collaboration with other health professionals which will help them learn how to communicate, treat, and establish positive relationships with other healthcare practitioners.

Initial applicant deadline: December 15, 2021, otherwise rolling deadline. Availability beginning January 2022. We require a minimum of 8 weeks from the date of application submission until your residency program can begin. This will give our staff time to review your application and determine the best fit for the primary therapist you will train under. Residency programs at our clinic in 2022 can begin no sooner than the 1st of March and be completed no later than the 31st of October. Although we currently intend to have one resident per year at our clinic, we will consider additional residents on a case by case basis.

At Pilates Central Wellness, the resident can expect to learn how to perform PRI positional tests, interpret the tests, and use the test results in selecting PRI non-manual techniques. Additionally, the resident can expect to learn how to accurately perform the Hruska Adduction Lift Test, Hruska Abduction Lift Test, Squat Test, and the Hruska Alternating Reciprocal Rotation Test, accurately interpret the results, and use the results in selecting PRI non-manual techniques. The resident will also be exposed to the use of PRI reference centers, how to use them to assist in the selection of PRI non-manual techniques, and use the reference centers during the application of PRI non-manual techniques. Due to our unique environment, the resident will also be introduced to the application of PRI concepts with Pilates activities, should the resident desire that learning opportunity. The resident will be exposed to various methods of cuing for PRI non-manual techniques, as well as ideas for refinement of their utilization of PRI manual techniques. As opportunities arise, the resident will be exposed to how and when an interdisciplinary referral to a dentist may be necessary.

SIMIO Health & Wellness is a restorative wellness center integrating PRI science and technique throughout our physical therapy and wellness products. We strive to remain both learners and educators in equal doses throughout our careers. We believe this is essential in remaining relevant to our client population and their physiologic needs. As a Certified Postural Restoration Center, we feel the science and application of PRI concepts and relative clinical decision making requires practice and clinical integration. We recognize that opportunity for clinicians to fully apply course content in the clinical setting is not always easily attained. SIMIO is committed to enhancement and delivery of the PRI technology through weekly staff inservice and mentorship. Over years of business development, we have fostered many inter-disciplinary relationships that allow our center to provide complete PRI interventions as presented in PRI coursework. We are happy to offer this opportunity to take part in clinical and interdisciplinary integration at SIMIO to qualified applicants of the PRI Mini-Residency program.

Application deadlines do not apply as residency opportunities may be available throughout the year. SIMIO will host one resident at a time and will work to coordinate the date and schedule with the applicant.

A PRI Residency at Thrive Proactive Health will provide a great interdisciplinary experience and mentorship opportunity to enhance one’s appreciation, application, and understanding of the science of Postural Restoration in a private practice, physical therapy and integrative wellness center. In addition to Postural Restoration based physical therapy, we provide other onsite self care services including massage, cupping, acupuncture, energy medicine, fitness training, mindset training and performance psychology. Various educational opportunities will be offered weekly to the resident, including going through weekly meetings with our lead PRC, Julie Blandin and going through a structured curriculum that she created for her team. Structured feedback will be offered via competency evaluations every 2 weeks to help the resident understand their strengths and areas of opportunity. By the end of this 6 week residency, the resident will demonstrate application of PRI knowledge and patient care skills necessary to function as a staff therapist in an outpatient or sports setting. They will feel comfortable with efficient whole body PRI testing and interpretation of those results, orthotics fabrication, breathing and gait assessments,

“The mini-residency was such a profound experience that it’s taken me three months to write about it. The lessons I learned with three months of clinical observation at Pilates Central Wellness with my mentors Dan Houglum and Donna Parise Byrne far surpassed any expectations I could have had.

Firstly, I learned that PRI is not about the head, neck, pelvis, or ribcage. It’s not about the eyes or the teeth. It’s not even about the diaphragm (even though it is). It’s much more about the human in front of you and their summer plans, their child’s upcoming baseball game, the recent passing of a dog, the lighting in the room, and the tone of your voice. PRI is about the sum of many parts: relationships, rhythms, timing, and dynamic systems – even though that doesn’t seem to encapsulate it either.

Secondly, I learned that this process is not linear. I now know that I’m going to learn something, then I will learn it again, and in 10 years, I will learn it again. This mini-residency was an integral part of that journey and a formative step.

Lastly, the best and also the most challenging thing I got out of the mini-residency is the knowledge that to get “good” at PRI I have to completely surrender to a paradoxical balancing act of “I am confident in myself and my knowledge to guide this person in front of me,” and “I am not fixing anything, and I don’t know anything.”

If you’d like to have this experience, I advise you to have a personal alternating movement practice (mine was boxing) that will shove you out of your thinking brain and into your body-brain. In that space between, you will achieve integration of the science by felt sense and not just memorization or understanding of the algorithms.

And if you don’t know how to ask questions, take a course on asking questions—because you don’t know what you don’t know until you know it or know how to ask about it.
