If you are a member of the APTA, make sure you check out these two articles found in the August edition:

Understanding the Lived Experiences of Patients: Application of a Phenomenological Approach to Ethics

Proprioceptive Acuity Assessment Via Joint Position Matching: From Basic Science to General Practice

The first article discusses the word “disability”.  It gives some great insight on how patient’s personally relate to disability and the role a Physical Therapist plays when treating disabilities physically and emotionally.  The second article covers the critical role that proprioceptive feedback plays in the neuromotor system.  It reminded us how important proprioception is with all of our activities.  Just because we ask patients to lift or turn a certain way doesn’t mean they actually “feel” what the activity was designed to “feel”!

We received THIS ARTICLE from Michael Mullin, ATC, PTA on idiopathic scoliosis.

“In all children with so-called idiopathic scoliosis limited adduction of the right hip was found, or even abduction contracture of this hip, often connected with flexion and external rotation contracture.”

This is a great article that discusses the etiology of scoliosis and how it relates to abnormal hip movement.
