Elizabeth Wheeler recently shared with us some good news! Liz is a PT who has attended PRI courses and implemented the techniques with great success. Congratulations, Liz!

Postural restoration is going to the major leagues!  I have been named the PT for the Washington Nationals baseball team!  I will be going down to spring training in Florida and have been asked to do PRI assessments on all the baseball players.  I have put together a patient questionnaire (including dental & optical history), a list of desired pictures (to compare before and after – upon completion of the season and postural restoration rehab), and a general PRI assessment form. I would like your input as to what else to include.  This information could be a golden opportunity for a ton of objective PRI info….. that I hope to turn into a published paper.  – Liz Wheeler

Happy Holidays from all of us at PRI. Our office will be closed at 1:00 pm on December 24th until Monday December 29th.

Ron Hruska has been sited again in the Brazilian Journal of Oral Sciences.  “Physiotherapeutic treatment for temporomandibular disorders (TMD)” written by Grossi and Chaves discusses considerations that need to be made when treating TMD.  “One of the most important approachs for TMD physical therapy treatment must be the modification of craniocervical biomechanics and its effects to posture as an etiologic or perpetuating TMD factor”.  To access this complete article, click here!

If you caught yesterday’s blog…here are the other five reasons PRI dilemmas are reduced or resolved:

6.  Leading with left hand and right leg to encourage right arm extension (right thoracic rotation).
Gait
7.  Achieving a reverse squat from a PRI level 4 Squat Test.
Squat test
8. Occasionally focusing on a target with left eye during upright (standing or seated) diaphragmatic breathing.
9.  Keeping tongue up with right upper extremity demands.
10. Walking counterclockwise periodically throughout the day with calcaneal stabilization footwear and mid arch contact.

Next week we will discuss common Myokinematic Restoration, Postural Respiration, and Cervical-Cranio-Mandibular Restoration dilemmas.

For those planning to attend our Impingement & Instability course in Minneapolis…October 10th will be the last day to reserve a hotel room at our discounted rate. Please call the hotel at (952) 854-1000 and ask to reserve your room in the block for “Impingement Course”.

We are often asked for evidence based articles supporting PRI. The “evidence” is there, but going to all the sources as they presently exist, hasn’t been put together for the general public…yet!  A while back, upon request, Ron Hruska wrote an explanation on his view of evidence based material as it relates to PRI.  Please read!

When treating the geriatric population or someone with acute pain, we modify our testing and treatment all the time.  You can take several of the sidelying activities and modify them to aseated position.  This is an example of a modified Sidelying Adductor Pull Back.  Because of the patients inability to get on and off the floor, the therapist has instructed this activity in a seated position.  What’s even more beneficial to this modified seated position is the ability for the patient to isolate just the left adductors by placing her right hand medially to the left knee.  With verbal cues for the patient to “press their left knee into their right hand”, they isolate just the left adductors without right adductor involvement.  To access the complete handout, click here!

[PRI Recommended TMJ Proprioceptive Occlusal Splints]

We have updated the page discussing Recommended TMJ Splints.  This handout provides a great reference for mandibular and maxillary splints and the benefits of both.  We have now added discussion regarding permissive and directive splints and the considerations that need to take place before using both.  To access our updated handout on PRI Recommended TMJ Proprioceptive Occlusal Splints, click here!

October 4th is the date for our one day clinical course, Postural Restoration, in Sioux City, Iowa.  Please join us at Sioux City Physical Therapy to discuss concepts covered in Myokinematic Restoration.  Topics of interest include but are not limited to, objective tests and measurements, manual and non-manual techniques, exercise progression and patient populations including AIC, BC and PEC patients.

Understanding Postural Symmetry to Improve Performance and Prevent Injury is the latest article written by Lori Thomsen, PT, PRC.  This article addresses postural asymmetries of the cycling athlete that lead to pain and dysfunction.  This article is one of a four part series that will be written by the staff at the Hruska Clinic for a local company called Performance Conditioning Inc. Check out this article here!

After spending four days in Seoul, South Korea, Ron has returned home safely.  Although he is adjusting to the 14 hour time change, he is energized by his experience!  Dr. Kim and Dr. Chang of Kim and Chang Spine and Chiropractic Clinic hosted a three day course covering both Myokinematic Restoration and Postural Respiration.

Over 20 attendees were present at this course.  The majority of the class didn’t speak English, however, Dr. Kim was there to translate.

By the end of the three days, Ron had all the attendees checking Adduction Drop Tests, performing 90-90 Hemibridges, and performing a manual Left AIC technique!

While not teaching, Ron was able to learn about Dr. Kim and Dr. Chang’s practice and their current method of treatment.  The majority of the physicians present were Oriental Medicine Doctor’s.  While there, Ron received two vitamin injections, which he said “were excellent”.  Below is a picture of Ron with two Doctors and behind them is the area where the herbs are stored.

In the evenings, Dr. Kim and Dr. Chang entertained Ron with dinner.

Downtown Seoul!

This is a fitness park (look at that thoracic abduction)!

Although Ron is glad to be home safely, he feels honored to have had this experience.
