This week’s featured speaker for our 5th Annual Interdisciplinary Integration Symposium is Ken Crenshaw. A native of New Mexico, Crenshaw graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in sports medicine and worked as an athletic trainer in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization for three years and as the strength and conditioning coordinator with the Atlanta Braves for four years before heading to Tampa Bay for 10 years. In December 2005, Crenshaw was named the Head Athletic Trainer for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

“After meeting Ken Crenshaw in 2008, at an educational course that I presented to his staff, he sent me an article written by Pavel Kolar, a mentor of his and mine. Since that time, he has sent me several articles and emails on everything from the diaphragm to neurology as it relates to stabilization and integrating function. He has so much experience and wisdom. What were we thinking when we scheduled him to speak for only 2 hours?” - Ron Hruska

Monterey, CA (Postural Respiration) - Three great days on the Monterey Peninsula.  Provided staff training at the Pebble Beach Golf Academy on Friday followed by the Postural Respiration course in Monterey on Saturday and Sunday.  A big thank you to Julie Blandin, PT, PRC for all the work she does to promote PRI in California.  She is a West Coast pioneer that has overcome a wide variety of obstacles to help advance PRI to a new and very interested audience. Way to go Julie! -James Anderson

Bath, ME (Postural Respiration) - This past weekend in Maine was one of the better Postural Respiration classes I have taught. We had lots of time for progression of non-manual techniques and the entire class was enthusiastic and switched-on! -Mike Cantrell

Wilmette, IL (Myokinematic Restoration) - Had a great weekend in the Windy City teaching Myokinematic Restoration of the hip and pelvis to a diverse group of professionals! It is exciting to see the science of PRI reaching out to other disciplines! Donna is a wonderful host and her staff of Pilates and Yoga instructors energy was infectious!  It is always great to see new clinicians reactions to the power of respiration and the connection to the pelvis.  I remember my first impression of Ron’s work and I am humbled to share it with others! I cant wait to teach again! -Jen Poulin

This week’s featured speaker for our 5th Annual Interdisciplinary Integration Symposium is Heidi Wise, OD, FCOVD. Dr. Wise graduated from Troy State University in 1994 with Bachelor’s degrees in both Math & Chemistry. She continued her education at Southern College of Optometry where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1998.

Dr. Wise worked in primary care optometry before opening a private practice, PRI Vision in Lincoln, NE which focuses on expanded services including vision training, behavioral optometry and neuro-optometry integrating with the science of Postural Restoration®. These areas focus on helping children and adults gain better vision skills to maximize performance in school, work and while playing sports. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, Nebraska Optometric Association, College of Optometrists in Vision Development, and Heart of America Contact Lens Society. In 2011, Dr. Wise completed her fellowship in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD).

“Dr. Heidi Wise has devoted her professional career to understanding and changing how the visual system impacts human performance. She will enlighten you on how the visual system limits or enhances athletic performance in her two-hour talk, by changing the biomechanics behind a batter’s swing or a golfer’s concentration before a putt. Three key areas that are often not considered reflections of the visual system’s function and behavior include muscle lengthening and strengthening, breathing and the mental game. Should be an eye-opener.” - Ron Hruska

We had another busy weekend of PRI courses! Despite another winter storm and a few travel delays getting home, the faculty reported a great weekend!

Pelvis Restoration (Salem, OR) - This past weekend in Oregon was amazing.  Approximately 10 individuals experienced their first PRI course!  What a fun and exciting time.  It was also rewarding to see “light bulb” moments going off for others who have attended other courses.  I feel “integration” was a key word this past weekend with how the Pelvis Restoration course integrates Postural Respiration and Myokinematic Restoration together.  Understanding how that polyarticular chain of muscle integrates the whole system.  It was an awesome weekend.  Thanks Salem Health for hosting us this past weekend! -Lori Thomsen

Myokinematic Restoration (Grand Rapids, MN) - Snow, cold, and northern Minnesota hospitality came together for another great PRI course! A group of PRI educated clinicians recruited their co-workers who had not taken an actual course but had seen Postural Restoration used clinically with good results.  Less time introducing PRI concepts allowed a lot of good clinical discussion on things like how to manage the Left AIC foot pattern and dynamic standing exercise activities. -James Anderson

Cervical-Cranio-Mandibular Restoration (Minneapolis, MN) - Karen and Carrie thank you for hosting the TMCC course this past weekend. I enjoy teaching this course so much, especially when the audience is multi-disciplinary (optometrist, dentists, ATC’s, PT’s and strength coaches) and they let me “jump around” to teach in an andragogical manner. Thanks! -Ron Hruska

For those of you who know Ron pretty well or if you saw his Twitter posting yesterday, you have realized that he likes to know “What’s your story?” He enjoyed reading these recent emails this past week! Thanks for sharing!

I can’t tell you how excited I am by the work that you’ve done (and are doing), bringing together concepts and techniques from various disciplines, and building a unique and incredibly insightful approach to physical therapy examination, evaluation and treatment.  I realize that your work (as all of our work) is built on the shoulders of others, and I am not prone to hyperbole, nor have I ever had a hero; still, I am awed by the genius of your constructions.  I am reeling a bit from all of the information I have received in taking 3 of PRI’s courses in the last month, but everything I have learned has resonated strongly.  There are many patients who I haven’t been able to help, many more who I could never take to 100%, and I’ve always been very aware that I was missing something.  Though I have treated very few patients with the PRI approach thus far, I am convinced that this is the missing link.  I am a bit of a continuing ed junkie, have taken many hundreds of hours of courses (most of them excellent) and am in the process of completing my DPT degree, but I have never encountered coursework that was this inspiring.  It seems that you are grossly under-appreciated in the physical therapy world and I just want to thank you for all you have done and all you continue to do!
- Carrie S.

All of you guys at PRI are amazing!  I hope that you know how important each of your roles is.  PRI is really changing the lives of countless individuals each and every single day.  It is not only the lives of the patients, but the family members and also the clinicians that are using this.  I, for one, was super frustrated with being a PT and was feeling pretty much like I was wasting my time before I fell into a PRI course.  It was the first course that Jen Poulin had taught and it literally has changed my life. I know that it is easy to get bogged down in our daily lives and our work and to feel like what we are doing is just ‘work’ or doesn’t impact people, but it does. - Lori S

Maryland Sports Care and Rehab in Urbana, MD hosted Cervical-Cranio-Mandibular Restoration this past weekend. With 28 attendees, this was our largest Cervical-Cranio-Mandibular Restoration course in the past couple years! Here’s what Ron had to say about his weekend in Maryland:

“I always become energized when I present information relating to temporal-mandibular-cervical-cranial function. Each of these regions have direct influence on the others and I believe this particular class reinforced the clinical issues that occur when temporal, cervical and mandibular function are influenced by cranial or sphenoid orientation. Genioglossus (tongue) activity was well-received and therefore, will be updated and reinforced in future courses. I want to thank all the attendees in the course, especially the two dentists who joined us, and the fabulous host site for a wonderful weekend!” - Ron Hruska
